In John 15:34, Jesus gives a commandment making it our job to love one another.

Love’s Job Description from 1 Corinthians 13

As with any job comes a job description. Paul lays out this job description to be love for us in the thirteenth chapter of 1 Corinthians.

When you read the excerpt in italics below, ask yourself the questions: Am I love? Do others see me as acting in love?

Put yourself in love’s description by replacing the word love with I am and your name.

For example: I am patient (describing yourself as love). Jackie is patient (others describing you).

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Are You Doing a Good Job at Loving Others?

Are you fulfilling love’s job description on all counts, or are there areas you need to improve? Oh, and don’t forget that loving yourself is part of the job description too.

In a world full of divisiveness, unkindness, where tensions continue to mount, the best way to counter all of this is through love. It’s becoming love itself.

Paul concludes Chapter 13 with verse 13: And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

Our ever changing world constantly tests our faith, give us cause to lean on hope, and makes us realize the importance of love. Paul further reminds us in verse eight that love “never ends.”

Are you up for the job? You may not put love on your resume, but your loving actions will go a long way in creating a nurturing environment that others around you will appreciate.

May we all aspire to become love.
